The mission of the University of Regina Women’s Centre is to provide a safe and supportive environment free of sexism and all forms of prejudice or discrimination in order to empower, educate, and advocate on behalf of all self-identified women at the University of Regina. The UR Women’s Centre is directed to inform the University of Regina campus community about those issues and concerns facing women in order to promote equality, understanding and peacefulness.

The University of Regina Women’s Centre was officially formed in 1969 as a student service provided by the Student’s Union. Although the Women’s Centre existed unofficially before this time it lacked a permanent facility and financial resources. The inception of the Women’s Centre was aimed at providing information regarding women’s health and was formally coined the Women’s Liberation Birth Control Centre.  The original mandate of the centre reflected the central theme of our current mandate by similarly emphasizing the need to eradicate sexism in our society, however the service provision of the original Women’s Centre closely reflected the political and feminist climate present during the 1960’s and 1970’s.  At this time, feminist political activists were struggling to ensure women’s reproductive choice and unrestricted access to reproductive health resources such as contraception.
